Obituary: UGM Medical Faculty Professor Soeripto Passes Away

UGM has announced the passing of Professor Soeripto, a distinguished academic from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK). The late professor died at 9.29 am WIB today at Sardjito Hospital at the age of 86. His body was laid in state at UGM’s Balairung before being buried at the university’s family cemetery in Sawitsari.

Family representative Hardyanto stated during the memorial ceremony at UGM’s Central Building on Friday (29 May 2026): ‘He was a key figure and pioneer in the development of oncology, not only at UGM but also nationally and internationally.’

The deceased began his academic career as a civil servant and lecturer in 1969. Besides his contributions to academia and medicine, he was also known for his passion for arts and culture. ‘He underwent wayang puppetry training at Habirandha in the Yogyakarta Palace,’ Hardyanto added.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia expressed deep condolences over Professor Soeripto’s death, noting he was one of the finest lecturers appointed as a professor with a scientific speech titled ‘Diagnosis and Epidemiology of Cancer in Yogyakarta’.
