Obama Reveals Plans Should He Run for President in 2028 Election
Former United States President Barack Obama has reportedly shared his grand vision for the future during a Democratic Party fundraising event. During the occasion, Obama highlighted the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the most critical issue the United States must confront in the coming years.
This perspective is being viewed as a strong signal of his intention to become more involved in the 2028 presidential election, according to a report by Politico on Monday (14/9/2026).
Obama stated that the development of AI would be “one of my main agendas” should he run as a presidential candidate.
“I will have a clear plan; I want to continue talking about this, and I will reveal a plan regarding safety—this is our plan to ensure that children are not affected,” he said, as quoted by Politability and The New York Times.
Obama expressed that the current direction of technological development and artificial intelligence will be decisive for the future fate of the United States. He emphasised that if not properly regulated, these technological advancements could widen social inequality, replace jobs, and threaten civil liberties.
In his speech, Obama stressed that the progress of artificial intelligence must not only benefit the wealthiest few in Silicon Valley. The technology must be regulated to benefit all citizens, ranging from job protection and equal access to the prevention of personal data misuse.
“This is not merely about technology,” Obama remarked. “It is about who holds control, who profits, and who is protected by these rules. If we allow this to proceed without direction, the result will be that the rich become richer, and the less fortunate are left further behind.”
Obama even compared AI to the threat of nuclear technology. The difference, he noted, is that AI lacks the natural and physical constraints inherent to nuclear weapons. Furthermore, AI development is now in the hands of private entities rather than the state.
Members of the US Congress have attempted to draft legislation to slow or limit AI development, but have repeatedly failed. One of the key debates in the US Senate concerns the extent of the responsibility AI development companies should bear regarding the impacts and damages caused by their products.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has stated that he is unconcerned with the threats posed by AI. Trump’s sole focus regarding AI is ensuring that the US defeats China.
