NYT Report: US and Israel Prepare for New Attack on Iran Next Week
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – The US and Israel are actively preparing for new hostilities with Iran and could launch attacks as early as next week. This is according to a report by The New York Times, citing sources from within the government, as reported by RT on Saturday (16/5/2026).
Two unnamed Middle Eastern officials told NYT on Friday that preparations for a new attack by Israel and the US have intensified in recent days. “The conflict could escalate as early as next week,” according to the sources.
A US official stated that options may include more aggressive bombing attacks against Iranian military targets and infrastructure sites.
Another option involves a ‘raid’ to seize Tehran’s enriched uranium stockpile, which is believed to be buried underground following the US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to retaliate against Iran, expressing his dissatisfaction with Tehran’s proposals.
Trump condemned Iran’s response to the American proposal last weekend, calling it “garbage”.
It is now widely known that indirect negotiations between Iran and the Trump administration have stalled since a fragile ceasefire was established in April, over a month after the hostilities began.
Both countries have repeatedly rejected third-party demands as unrealistic. Both Tehran and Washington continue to insist that they are in control.
At the same time, disruptions continue in the Strait of Hormuz, which is significantly affecting global shipping and causing oil shortages worldwide. Although Iran has announced its own mechanism to regulate maritime traffic in the waterway, Washington has rejected this scheme and imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports in response.
Tehran says it is ready to respond to US aggression.
