Nyobeng tradition strengthens harmony and identity of border communities
Bengkayang Regent Sebastianus Darwis believes the Nyobeng tradition, preserved by the community of Dusun Sebujit in Siding District, Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan, plays a crucial role in fostering harmony and strengthening the identity of people living in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region.
According to Darwis, amidst modernisation and the passage of time, the Nyobeng tradition is not only a cultural heritage that must be safeguarded but also a means of reinforcing a sense of unity and togetherness within the community.
“The Nyobeng tradition embodies noble values passed down by our ancestors, such as mutual cooperation, brotherhood, respect for customs and culture, and a spirit of living harmoniously in diversity. These values must be continuously preserved and transmitted to the younger generation,” Darwis said while attending the Nyobeng event in Sebujit on Monday.
He stated that border communities have a strategic role in safeguarding the nation’s identity. Therefore, preserving local culture is an essential part of strengthening the community’s character while maintaining national integrity.
According to him, Nyobeng serves as proof that indigenous communities can maintain ancestral traditions amidst changing times without abandoning national values.
“As a border region, Bengkayang possesses extraordinary cultural wealth. Traditions like Nyobeng are not only a source of pride for the indigenous community but also a regional identity and a cultural asset that we must preserve together,” he remarked.
Darwis expressed his appreciation to the Dayak Bidayuh Sebujit indigenous community, who continue to uphold and carry out the tradition from generation to generation. He hopes the younger generation will continue to recognise, learn, and love their regional culture so that the traditions inherited from their ancestors do not vanish over time.
Beyond being a customary ritual, he added, Nyobeng also serves as a moment to strengthen community ties. Migrant residents typically return to their hometown to participate in the series of customary activities, creating a space of togetherness that reinforces social relationships within the community.
“The Bengkayang Regency Government will continue to support the preservation of local culture as part of regional development. Culture is our identity and our strength, so it must be protected to remain alive and thriving,” he said.
The Nyobeng tradition carried out by the indigenous community in Sebujit has not only become a symbol of respect for ancestors but also a reflection of the strong values of unity and harmony among border communities, preserved from generation to generation.
