Nyepi: Muhammadiyah Bali Urges Members to Perform Takbir at Home
The Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) in Bali has issued a proclamation directing Muhammadiyah residents on the Island of the Gods to carry out takbiran ahead of Eid al-Fitr at their respective homes. This is because the night of takbiran coincides with Nyepi Day.
“This is also guidance from the centre; if takbiran is not feasible, we are urged to perform takbiran at our respective homes, so we have issued a proclamation for takbiran at home,” said PWM Bali Chairman Husnul Fahmi in Denpasar on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
He explained that the outcome of a meeting with the Bali Inter-Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB) and Bali Governor I Wayan Koster decided that Muslims, particularly Muhammadiyah, are permitted to perform takbiran at mosques on Thursday (19/3/2026). With the proviso that takbiran may only be conducted at the nearest mosque or mushalla, reached on foot, without loudspeakers, and with very minimal lighting.
However, Fahmi stated, to maintain tolerance and harmony in Bali, the decision for takbiran at respective homes was chosen. This has received a positive response from Muhammadiyah residents in Bali.
“We have conveyed it to the community, also shared the proclamation on social media a week ago, and it was accepted by the public that takbiran will be performed at home. Two days ago, we met with the Bali Governor and conveyed that agreement,” Fahmi said.
Through its proclamation, PWM Bali hopes that all Muhammadiyah residents will follow the urging. Nevertheless, some regencies have their own policies, such as Jembrana and Buleleng which do permit it. Thus, residents are urged to adhere to the rules.
In Bali, Muhammadiyah residents typically celebrate the night before Eid al-Fitr not with processional takbir or vehicle convoys. They tend to celebrate the victory after fasting Ramadan with takbiran at mosques or mushallas, but with the addition of loudspeakers only.
