Nyepi Day Coincides with Eid al-Fitr Takbir Night, Minister Reports to Prabowo

Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar told President Prabowo Subianto that Nyepi Day could coincide with the anticipated Takbir night for Eid al-Fitr on 19 March. He said they had prepared the celebration technically, especially in Bali. ‘I also reported on the Lebaran preparations because on the 19th Nyepi is observed. Nyepi means there must be no loud noise or vehicles, yet at night our friends will perform takbir,’ Nasaruddin said after meeting the President at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (4/3/2026). Nasaruddin noted that they had reached an agreement with local governments and Balinese figures that the takbir would not conflict with Nyepi. ‘Alhamdulillah we have reported to the President that there is an agreement with local authorities and Balinese leaders that the takbir does not clash with Nyepi. The condition is that Nyepi proceeds, but the takbir can take place too,’ he added. He explained that technical rules for using sound systems at mosques in Bali would be applied. He also discussed with the President the potential for a difference in Eid dates. ‘We will not use sound systems from 06:00 to 09:00, and Eid differences will be normal in Indonesia; we will see in the Isbat session when Eid al-Fitr will be announced.’
