Nvidia's Physical AI Strategy: Robotics Expansion and China Market Dominance
Nvidia is no longer just known as the power provider behind popular chatbots. The semiconductor giant is making a major bet on physical artificial intelligence (AI), a technology that enables artificial intelligence to interact directly with real-world objects such as robots, autonomous cars, and drones. This strategic move positions China as both a key market and a crucial partner for the company’s future.
Nvidia’s physical AI business currently generates annual revenue of approximately US$10 billion. Although this figure is still a small fraction of the company’s total revenue, which reached US$303 billion in the four quarters ending in July, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang projects massive growth. He believes this sector will grow tenfold over the next decade.
Nvidia’s strategy to dominate the robotics market mimics their past success with CUDA. The company pairs specialised physical AI chips with software development tools to ensure that robot and robotaxi developers remain locked into the Nvidia ecosystem. As part of this effort, Nvidia has released open-weight models such as GR00T and Cosmos, which can be freely downloaded and modified by developers.
