Nvidia Plans AI Data Centre Investments in South Korea

Nvidia has announced a US$1 billion (Rp 17.9 trillion) investment in collaboration with South Korean search engine company Naver. The investment will be used for the construction of an AI data centre being undertaken with Brookfield Corp. The investment from Nvidia will increase the size of the facility by more than three times. The US technology giant will also contribute AI computing hardware to the data centre. The Naver data centre project is located at the company’s GAK Sejong campus. The initial capacity of the location is 55 megawatts. According to the roadmap, the data centre is expected to reach gigawatt capacity by 2029. The Sejong campus will be used for graphics processing unit (GPU) workloads. In addition to the Naver partnership, Nvidia also announced a collaboration with South Korean conglomerate SK Group, which spans telecommunications, chip, and energy sectors. This partnership aims to build an AI data centre with a capacity exceeding 2 gigawatts. The first facility from this collaboration is likely to open in 2027. Nvidia stated that the scale of this facility is comparable to other projects in South Korea, including a separate plan with a capacity reaching 3 gigawatts. Nvidia also plans to assist SK Hynix in designing future HBM chips. SK Hynix is already a supplier of high-bandwidth memory chips.
