Nuzulul Quran Commemoration at the Palace: Quraish Shihab Prays for Indonesia

Jakarta — Islamic scholar and intellectual Prof Muhammad Quraish Shihab emphasised the importance of peace as the primary message of the Quran during a sermon at the state-level Nuzulul Quran commemoration. The event at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 10 March 2026, was also attended by President Prabowo Subianto.

In his address, Quraish explained that the Quran places peace as an important objective that must be realised in human life. According to him, peace is not only a societal necessity but also a religious imperative.

“God Almighty has obligated us to realise peace. Peace originates from our souls. This peace emanating from our souls extends into our society and into world society,” said the former Minister of Religious Affairs.

He explained that peace is the aspiration of all humanity and a powerful message throughout the Quran. Indeed, Quraish noted, when those considered adversaries invite reconciliation, the faithful are taught to accept such overtures.

“Peace is the aspiration of all people, the aspiration of all religions. Peace is so important that the Quran states that if your enemies invite you to make peace, then accept that peace,” he said.

Quraish elaborated that the Quran provides guidance along various paths to peace that ultimately lead humanity towards the straight path. He also emphasised that efforts to achieve peace must be pursued alongside the enforcement of justice.

“We desire peace, but we do not wish to sacrifice justice. We desire peace, and yet justice too must we uphold,” he said.
