Nutmeg social forestry groups in Fakfak strengthen financial literacy and business management

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The EcoNusa Foundation, together with the Production Forest Management Unit (KPHP) Unit XVI/CDK Fakfak, organised financial literacy and business management training for Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) in Fakfak Regency, West Papua.
The activity, which took place on 6-8 August 2026, was attended by farmer groups and KUPS assisted by the EcoNusa Foundation, including the Henggi Wria Farmer Group and KUPS Henggi Pak in Wartutin Village, as well as a number of KUPS assisted by KPHP Unit XVI/CDK Fakfak.
EcoNusa Foundation Programme Associate Rahmad Iriyandi said in a press release on Saturday that the training aimed to strengthen the capacity of KUPS in managing their businesses, particularly from the administrative and financial side, because assistance so far has focused more on production and marketing aspects.
“When business money and household money are still mixed, or income and expenditure are not recorded, the group will find it difficult to know how much capital they actually have, how much has been spent, and whether the business is making a profit,” he said.
He explained that the financial management introduced in the training does not have to be complicated. The main thing that needs to be built is the habit of recording transactions, separating business money from household needs, planning the use of funds, and conducting regular evaluations.
LPHD Chairman Offie Yamin Patiran said that previously the recording of group income and expenditure had not been carried out routinely. After attending the training, his side realised that financial management is an important part of running a business.
Meanwhile, KUPS Henggi Pak Wartutin Chairman Abner Hombore said the training provided an understanding of how to manage business money regularly and separate it from household money.
Head of KPHP XVI Fakfak Thaib Wasaraka said the capacity strengthening is needed so that KUPS are not only able to manage resources and produce products, but also run their businesses professionally.
“Financial management is one of the important foundations for business sustainability. With good record-keeping, groups can know their income, expenditure, capital, and business results,” he said.
KPHP will subsequently provide assistance and monitoring of the implementation of the training results, while also encouraging coordination between KUPS, social forestry facilitators, local government, and development partners.
Capacity strengthening and business governance for community-based social forestry enterprises was also one of the issues discussed at the Papeda Summit in Sorong on 2-4 September 2026, including the development of a new nature economy through green-blue financing innovation and strengthening sustainable value chains based on local resources.
