Nusron Says Prabowo's Initiative to Mediate US–Iran Backed by the Middle East
The Minister for Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR/BPN), and a Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figure, Nusron Wahid, said President Prabowo Subianto’s move to mediate between the United States, Israel and Iran has been welcomed by the world. Nusron said Middle Eastern countries support the initiative.
‘As things stand, it was conveyed that in principle the President wishes to hold a meeting with Iran to become a mediator and Iran is open to it,’ Nusron Wahid said after the iftar with ulama at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday evening, 5 March 2026.
‘And then the steps taken by the President have received support from several Middle Eastern countries and other Islamic nations. Including Pakistan, also the UAE,’ he explained.
‘Nevertheless, Nusron handed over to Foreign Minister Sugiono to explain further to the public later. He only stressed that Prabowo’s initiative has the support of the war-affected countries.’
‘But of course this lies within the Foreign Minister’s domain to explain. But as explained earlier, the President’s efforts are receiving support from leaders of other Middle Eastern countries,’ Nusron said.
’Furthermore, Nusron said Prabowo together with the eight Arab leaders involved and affected by the war are committed to peace.
‘In essence, the President together with seven leaders of the eight-member group wants peace. We must not let the war drag on, especially in Iran or in the Gulf region and so on,’ he said.
’Prabowo’s initiative to become mediator was previously conveyed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu RI) in an official statement some time ago. The ministry said Prabowo is prepared to be a mediator between the US, Israel and Iran. Prabowo is said to be ready to travel to Tehran if the relevant countries permit.
‘The Government of Indonesia, in this case the President of the Republic of Indonesia, expresses readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive security environment and if approved by both sides, the President of Indonesia is willing to travel to Tehran to mediate,’ the statement read.
