Nusron Says Middle East Backs Prabowo's Bid to Mediate the US-Iran Conflict
Jakarta, VIVA – The Minister of ATR/BPN and Nahdlatul Ulama figure Nusron Wahid said that the intention of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to act as mediator in the US–Iran conflict has been welcomed by Middle Eastern countries.
“While considering the situation, it was stated that in principle the President wishes to see a meeting with Iran, to mediate and for Iran to open up to dialogue,” Nusron told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta, Friday, 6 March 2026.
“Then, the steps taken by the President have received support from several Middle Eastern countries and other Muslim nations. Including from Pakistan, and also from the UAE,” he added.
Nusron declined to speak much about Prabowo’s plan to mediate the US–Iran conflict. He left it entirely to Foreign Minister Sugiono to explain the matter.
“In essence, the President, together with seven leaders of countries belonging to the group of eight, desires peace. We must not let war drag on, especially in Iran and the Gulf region, and so on,” Nusron said.
Earlier reports said that President Prabowo Subianto stated he was ready to travel to Iran to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive security situation.
In an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), the Indonesian government expressed regret at the breakdown of negotiations between the US and Iran, which has affected the escalation of military activity in the Middle East.
Indonesia calls on all parties to exercise restraint and to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy. The government also stresses the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country, and resolving differences by peaceful means.
“The Government of Indonesia, in this case the President of the Republic of Indonesia, expresses readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive security environment and, if both sides agree, the President is prepared to travel to Tehran to mediate,” the Kemlu statement said.
This step reflects Indonesia’s ongoing commitment to play an active role in maintaining global stability, in line with the long-standing independent and active foreign policy that has been upheld.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that escalating tensions in the Middle East could disrupt regional stability as well as global peace and security.
