The Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN), together with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and PT Pamapersada Nusantara, held a tree-planting activity in the Wanagama area located in the Rimba Kota B Zone of the Central Government Core Area (KIPP) of IKN, Sepaku District, North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. “This tree-planting activity is in the context of commemorating World Environment Day,” said Head of the Nusantara Authority Basuki Hadimuljono when asked about the activity in Sepaku on Friday. He added that the tree-planting activity also serves as a commitment that the development of IKN is not only focused on physical construction, but also on efforts to restore natural life so that it can thrive alongside human activities. Tree planting is carried out periodically and is not merely about planting trees, but about restoring natural life in IKN, where various wildlife species are now beginning to be spotted again in the area of Indonesia’s new capital. He explained that the presence of these wild animals is one sign that a healthy ecosystem is beginning to form, in line with efforts to restore the area’s natural functions through the smart forest city concept. “The ecosystem being built is beginning to come to life and provides space for biodiversity to develop,” he added. Wanagama is a 621-hectare forest area developed as a centre for education, research, and tropical rainforest ecosystem restoration that supports IKN’s vision as a city in harmony with nature. PT Pamapersada Nusantara Representative Gunawan Setiadi noted that the company’s involvement in the tree-planting activity is part of a commitment to support environmental conservation as well as the development of nature-based learning spaces. The Rector of UGM expressed hope that through collaboration between the government, academia, and the business world, IKN will continue to strengthen its transformation as a city of the future that prioritises a balance between development and environmental sustainability.
