Nusantara Activists' Network hopes KPK will expedite process against Muhammad Suryo

Jakarta - The Jaringan Aktivis Nusantara (JAN) hopes the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will promptly conclude the legal process against cigarette entrepreneur Muhammad Suryo. National Coordinator of JAN, Ibrahim, stated that based on their investigations and records, Suryo has been strongly indicated to be involved in various corruption crimes. “However, the individual appears to have legal immunity or impunity,” Ibrahim revealed in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday. Ibrahim assessed that Suryo’s track record and indications of involvement in various legal cases are not mere fabrications but are supported by various findings and trial facts. The findings in question include Suryo’s involvement in the alleged corruption case at the Directorate General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation (DJKA Kemenhub). Not only that, he believes Suryo is suspected of undermining the law by skipping a recent KPK summons. Accordingly, Ibrahim said he has submitted JAN’s report to the KPK through the KPK’s Public Relations unit, hoping it can be followed up to uncover Suryo’s role. In addition, JAN also held an action in front of the KPK building on Wednesday (13/5) to urge the anti-corruption agency not to fear any interventions in uncovering the alleged criminal corruption case involving Suryo. The resolution of the case, according to Ibrahim, is very crucial to avoid negative perceptions in society that damage the integrity of law enforcement institutions and to ensure the upholding of the principle of equality before the law. “Therefore, we urge the KPK and its apparatus to immediately summon by force, conduct a comprehensive examination, and detain Muhammad Suryo,” he emphasised. Previously, the KPK revealed that cigarette entrepreneur Muhammad Suryo (MS) did not attend the summons and provided no confirmation on 2 April 2026, as a witness in the alleged corruption case within the Directorate General of Customs and Excise of the Ministry of Finance. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo explained that the anti-corruption agency would coordinate again with Muhammad Suryo to fulfil the KPK summons. “We also urge Brother MS or other witnesses to be cooperative in the future by attending the investigators’ summons and providing the necessary statements, as every statement from witnesses is of course important and needed to help reveal this case clearly,” said Budi.
