Nusa Penida Set to Become Green Island as Electric Vehicles Arrive

The Klungkung Regency government has officially partnered with PT Rilex Velocity Express (RVE) and state-owned PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk to transform Nusa Penida into a green island. The move was initiated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of a Green Mobility Ecosystem and electric vehicles at the Sampalan public field, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, Bali, on Tuesday (14/7/2026). The strategic cooperation was signed directly by Klungkung Regent I Made Satria, PT RVE Director Raymond Wibisono Djukardi, and Bank Mandiri Area Denpasar representative Hero Priantoro. Together, they committed to strengthening financial services to support an environmentally friendly ecosystem on Nusa Penida. Klungkung Regent I Made Satria expressed appreciation for all parties involved in realising this synergy. According to him, the collaboration serves as a crucial foundation for maintaining Nusa Penida’s natural balance amidst economic and tourism growth. “This vision is not only about preserving natural beauty, but about building an island that can balance economic growth, environmental conservation, and the improvement of community welfare,” Satria said. Satria explained that the move aligns with the Nusa Penida Roadmap towards 100 per cent renewable energy. The regional government targets the island group to fully utilise clean energy by 2030. To achieve this target, the use of renewable energy power plants and energy storage systems will be accelerated. Meanwhile, the use of diesel-fired power plants will be gradually phased out. The Klungkung Regency government, Satria continued, is committed to encouraging the integration of green programmes from upstream to downstream. This includes accelerating the use of electric vehicles, developing supporting infrastructure, digitising public services, and implementing waste management based on a circular economy. “I invite all parties to ensure this cooperation does not stop as an administrative document, but is truly realised through concrete action. Let us make Nusa Penida an example that economic development, tourism, and environmental conservation can run harmoniously,” he added. Meanwhile, PT RVE Director Raymond Wibisono Djukardi explained that the Green Mobility Ecosystem brought to Nusa Penida is an integrated transportation system based on electric vehicles. The ecosystem includes the provision of EV fleets, charging stations, a digital platform, local driver training, and tourism mobility services. Through this collaboration, Nusa Penida is targeted to become a pioneer of Green Mobility Tourism and the first tourist island in Indonesia with a modern integrated electric transportation ecosystem. “The goal is to create new jobs for the people of Klungkung and realise a shared vision as a pioneer of sustainable green tourism. We thank the Klungkung Regency government for their trust,” Raymond said. He expressed hope that the presence of this environmentally friendly vehicle system would elevate tourism in Nusa Penida to a more advanced and high-quality level without damaging Bali’s natural environment.
