Nurdin's detention extended: Police

JAKARTA: The police have extended the detention period of former lawmaker Nurdin Halid, a suspect in the smuggling of 73,000 tons of sugar from Thailand last May, for another 30 days, pending his transfer to prosecutors.

National Police chief of detectives Comr. Gen. Suyitno Landung said on Friday, due to the extension Nurdin would remain in police custody until Dec. 27.

Suyitno also said the police were still coordinating with prosecutors on a convenient date for the transfer. Prosecutors have already accepted the case file of his involvement in sugar smuggling early this year. -- JP
