JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, revealed that the number of trips by the public during the 2026 Eid homecoming period experienced a decline compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the actual movement exceeded the figures projected in the initial survey.

Based on Mobile Positioning Data (MPD), the number of people travelling over 17 days reached 147.55 million, an increase of 2.53% compared to the survey result of 143.92 million. However, when compared to the actual figures for the 2025 Eid transport, this number declined by 4.57% from 154.62 million.

The Minister of Transportation explained that the decrease in homecomers compared to last year is inseparable from various considerations by the public in undertaking trips.

“Of course, there are several considerations from the public for travelling, which we will elaborate further regarding the decline compared to last year,” said Dudy at the Ministry of Transportation on Monday (30/3/2026).

“However, we can state that as mentioned at the beginning, although the survey showed 143.92 million people, the actual figure saw an increase,” he clarified.

According to Dudy, differences in conditions between last year and this year also influenced the public’s decisions to travel.

“So, the conditions last year and this year may have situations where the public responds to travelling with certain considerations,” he said.

“Nevertheless, we had anticipated that although the survey showed 143.92 million people, the actual figure indeed increased to 147 million,” he added.

However, from the perspective of public transport, the total number of passengers recorded was 23.54 million, or an increase of 10.87% compared to last year’s 21.23 million passengers. The rise occurred across all modes of transport.

Road transport served 3.89 million passengers, up 11.64%; sea transport 2.02 million passengers, up 9.86%; and air transport 4.77 million passengers, increasing by 6.97%.

Meanwhile, trains recorded 7.31 million passengers, up 10.13%, and ferry services had the highest growth with 5.52 million passengers, increasing by 15.36%.

Dudy emphasised that his ministry will conduct further evaluation to identify the main factors behind the overall decline in the number of trips.

“We will elaborate on the causes later,” he asserted.
