Number of Suspects in Post-Protest Riots in Jakarta Increases to 49

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have detained 322 individuals in connection with the riots that occurred during protests on 2t August. Of these, 273 people have now been released.

“The other 273 individuals have been sent home,” stated the Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

Budi explained that 49 of those detained have been officially named as suspects. He noted that 44 suspects are being handled by the Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, while five minors facing legal action are being handled by the Directorate of Women and Children Protection (PPA) and PPO.

“Consequently, the latest reference data shows 49 suspects out of the total 322 individuals detained,” he said.

Kombes Budi previously stated that a group of rioters arrived in front of the MPR/DPR building after the main protest mass had dispersed. This group, he continued, also threw various objects at security officers.

“After the series of expressions of aspiration ended and most of the crowd left the location, a group of rioters emerged, disrupting public order and attempting to carry out destruction, acts of vandalism, and throwing objects at officers,” Budi said during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Friday (28/8).

He stated that officers were able to manage the group of rioters and took action against those involved in the destruction.

“Officers then carried out several police actions to stop the acts of vandalism and destruction, in order to mitigate the spread of disturbances and ensure the safety of the community around the location,” he added.
