Number of female divorcees drops

JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta mayoralty reported that the number of divorced women in the area substantially fell from 16,498 last year to 13,990 this year.

M. Napis, spokesman for the mayoralty, was quoted by Merdeka daily as saying that the decrease is due mainly to the improvement of social welfare among residents of North Jakarta. Improving people's welfare tends to make them realize the importance of building healthy families and strengthening family values, he said.

Napis added that this attitude has made people understand that marriage is a sacred institution which should be respected and maintained. (yns)
