Nuclear power plant
Nuclear power plant
During my brief first visit to your country, I was shocked to read about a nuclear power plant that has been proposed by Canadian interests. My sources tell me that the power plant will be located on a fault line and could be completed quickly.
I realize that there are many reasons supporting energy diversification and concern over global warming should indeed persuade all countries to investigate alternatives to coal, oil and natural gas for generating electricity.
However, please examine the evidence in the United States. Rancho Seco near Sacramento in California (the state capital) was shut down because it was built on an earthquake fault. Surely Indonesia, with more than one third of the world's active volcanoes (according to my guide) should heed the warning.
1996 marks 10 years since the disaster at Chernobyl. I urge your policy-makers to reconsider their plan to invest in a technology that produces radioactive materials that our children's grandchildren's grandchildren will have to watch over.
