Technicians, unable to refuse Dyatlov’s threats of reassignment, complied. As night fell, the generator was activated and water entered the turbine, but the generator’s power soon dropped drastically. The reactor core temperature rose rapidly. Technicians rushed to press the SCRAM button on the computer, a command to restart the generator, but the button failed due to lack of maintenance. The reactor core temperature soared to 3,000 degrees Celsius and exploded violently. As radiation spread, many residents were asleep and unable to escape, suffering extreme exposure. Detection equipment failed to measure the extraordinarily high radiation levels. By daylight, people were shocked to see dust in the air, not realising it was radioactive fallout. The BBC recorded 90,000 long-term radiation-related deaths, while 600,000 people were exposed but survived. The World Health Organisation noted radiation reached up to 200,000 kilometres into Europe, and the Chernobyl site itself will remain uninhabitable for an estimated 20,000 years due to the severe contamination.
