Nucholish calls out HMI
Well-known Indonesian Islamic scholar Nurcholish Madjid
staunchly criticized the Association of Indonesian university
students (HMI) recently, saying that it has been orientated
towards position and power only. He has also said that HMI should
be dissolved so as to avoid condemnation.
Nurcholish also said that you did not have to search very deep
to find corrupt people in the association. He even said that
HMI's senior officials were not free from political bribes and
skullduggery when they want to have a certain position. A
position in the group often is an excellent path to becoming a
government official.
The sharp criticism is important as it was made
towards a very influential university student group. HMI has
become an important source of significant figures in the
government.
Nurcholish said that HMI's leadership training program which
began in the 1960s had not produced good fruit.
He expressed regret that HMI graduates had followed in the
steps of the Indonesian establishment, which only concentrates
their efforts on position and power.
This country badly needs more people like Nurcholish who dares
to tell the truth. -- ANTARA
