NU members told to look to Iraq

SEMARANG: Members of the 30-million-strong Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) are being advised to look to Iraqis for an example of loyalty to the government.

Achmad, a senior executive of the local branch of NU, said Tuesday Moslems across the country needed to unite and line up behind the government to overcome the current economic turmoil.

"Moslems should not be provoked into running riot because the action would only aggravate the situation," he said.

"At this time of crisis, what we need is strong nationalism as shown by the Iraqi people who remain loyal to (President) Saddam Husein," he said.

He reassured the members that sooner or later the government would eventually find a way to end the current crisis. (har)
