NU Determines 1 Muharram 1448 Falls Tomorrow, Differing from Government Holiday
The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has determined that 1 Muharram 1448 H falls tomorrow, Wednesday (17/6). This differs from the government’s national holiday for the Islamic New Year, which is observed today, Tuesday (16/6). The Islamic organisation Muhammadiyah has also set 1 Muharram 1448 H as today.
According to NU’s official website, the Falakiyah Institute of PBNU issued an official letter regarding the Muharram moon sighting, number 146/PB.08/A.II.11.13/13/06/2026, signed by Chairman KH Sirril Wafa and Secretary H Asmui Mansur on Monday (14/6/2026). The decision was based on the hilal (new crescent moon) not being sighted at any observation point across Indonesia on Monday Pon, 29 Dzulhijjah 1447 H, corresponding to 15 June 2026.
The announcement stated, ‘It has been reported that the rukyatul hilal (moon sighting) conducted on Monday Pon, 29 Dzulhijjah 1447 H/15 June 2026 M at various locations throughout Indonesia did not result in any sightings of the hilal.’ Consequently, the month of Dzulhijjah was completed to 30 days (istikmal). The Falakiyah Institute urged all its regional and branch administrators across Indonesia to actively disseminate this announcement to NU members. Muhammadiyah, using the Unified Global Hijri Calendar (KHGT), had already determined that 1 Muharram 1448 H falls today, aligning with the government’s national holiday.
