NU Declares 1 Muharram 1448 Falls on Wednesday, 17 June 2026

The Falakiyah Institute of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (LF PBNU) has officially announced that the beginning of the month of Muharram 1448 Hijriah falls on Wednesday Kliwon, 17 June 2026. The decision was reached after rukyatul hilal observations reported that the new moon was not sighted at any monitoring location. This determination differs from the stipulations of Muhammadiyah and the government, which set 1 Muharram on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. The announcement was made in an official letter issued on Monday, 29 Zulhijah 1447 H, or 15 June 2026, referencing the LF PBNU Decree number 008/SK/LFPBNU/VII/2024 concerning the Nahdlatul Ulama Almanac for 2026. Based on reports from the hilal monitoring conducted on Monday Pon, 29 Zulhijah 1447 H, all observation locations reported that the hilal was not successfully sighted. Consequently, LF PBNU applied the istikmal method, completing the month of Zulhijah to 30 days. The official statement, signed by Chairman Drs. KH. Sirril Wafa, MA, and Secretary H. Asmu’i Mansur, M.Kom, declared that the start of Muharram 1448 H coincides with Wednesday Kliwon, 17 June 2026, beginning from the preceding night, based on istikmal. LF PBNU has instructed all its branches at the regional and district levels across Indonesia to disseminate this announcement to Nahdliyin residents in their respective areas. This announcement serves as an official guide for NU members in conducting religious observances and agendas related to the Hijriah calendar at the start of the year 1448 H.
