NU and PKB, mother and child
NU and PKB, mother and child
From Media Indonesia
There have been attempts to disturb the close relationship
between Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic mass
organization, and the National Awakening Party (PKB) since the
inception of the latter. These attempts climaxed in the issue of
repositioning PKB's secretary general. Many external circles
believed this would lead to a rift, making PKB a small and
powerless party.
Fortunately, the ulemas of NU adopted a wise attitude and
prevented a split in PKB, so the issue was a blessing in
disguise. This is unlike similar issues involving other parties,
in which NU was not interested enough to intervene, even though
its members were involved.
The public is now increasingly aware that NU is the "cradle"
of PKB, like a mother who feels morally bound to actively foster
her beloved child. The party will hopefully be able to direct the
country toward justice and prosperity with God's blessing.
On the other hand, PKB should also regard NU as a parent
deserving respect, because the fate of this party is more or less
dependent on the organization.
