NTT Governor: Death toll from Flores earthquake rises
Kupang (ANTARA) - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Melki Laka Lena said that based on the latest report received, five people have been reported dead as a result of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Mbay, Nagekejo Regency.
“Based on the information I have received at this time, the number of fatalities has reached five,” he said in Kupang on Saturday.
He said that two of the victims who died were in Maumere, Sikka Regency, and three others in Manggarai Regency.
The victims who died, he said, were suspected to be due to the rubble of buildings that collapsed when the earthquake occurred in the area.
“But, we will confirm again the cause,” he said.
Melki added that detailed data regarding casualties, including deaths and injuries, will be conveyed upon his return from Flores.
“This afternoon we will depart for Flores and this evening we will provide another update, including casualties and damage,” he added.
Regarding the damage, he said, at this time several road sections in Flores have also been cut off and landslides have occurred as a result of the earthquake.
