NTT Earthquake Victim Update: 70 Dead, 132 Injured

Basarnas Operations Director First Admiral TNI Bramantyo reported that the earthquake victims in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) now number 70 dead and 132 injured during a press conference on Tuesday (18/8).

“The total number of victims is 202 people, with 70 dead and 132 injured. Furthermore, 40 are seriously injured and 92 are lightly injured,” said Bramantyo. This data is based on reports from the SAR team as of Monday (17/08) at 11.30 pm.

Currently, the SAR team in the field is focused on assisting with the sweeping, search and recovery efforts carried out by BNPB.

“Up to the third day yesterday, the operations we carried out were relatively limited to sweeping because, based on reports or input and data from the victims, there are no longer any of their relatives, neighbours or colleagues who are recorded as still being searched for,” explained Bramantyo.

The presentation by Basarnas was followed by a presentation from BNPB by Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan.

The highest number of fatalities was reported in Manggarai Regency (27 people) and East Manggarai Regency (25 people). Meanwhile, other fatalities were recorded in Nagekeo (8 people), Sikka (4 people), Ngada (2 people), West Manggarai (2 people) and Ende (2 people).

BNPB also reported 1,182 injured victims. This figure comes from the Ministry of Health and represents the number of people treated at health facilities, while the Basarnas report represents the number of victims found.

In addition, the BNPB report shows 40,040 displaced people. Berton explained that this data does not represent house damage.

“We need to be careful in interpreting this, but this is due to the significant psychological impact felt by residents,” explained Berton.

The breakdown of the number of displaced people is as follows: East Manggarai (approximately 15,465 people), Manggarai (6,847 people), Nagekeo (6,221 people), Sikka (5,681 people), Ende (3,666 people), Ngada (1,920 people) and West Manggarai (600 people).

Previously, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook NTT on Saturday (15/8). The NTT Provincial Government has declared an Earthquake Disaster Emergency Response Status in NTT for 14 days, from 15 to 28 August 2026.
