NTT Earthquake Update: Death Toll Exceeds 50, Thousands of Buildings Damaged

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has provided the latest update on the impact of the disaster in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. Data collection on casualties and damage following the M7.7 earthquake in the region is still being carried out by joint personnel.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, said that more than 50 people have now died and thousands of homes have been damaged.

Based on provisional data as of Sunday (16/8) at 16.00 WIB, the total number of fatalities has reached 53 people. The distribution of victims has been identified in Manggarai Regency with 25 people, East Manggarai 20 people, Sikka 4 people, West Manggarai 1 person, Nagekeo 1 person and Ende 2 people.

In addition to the fatalities, joint personnel have also evacuated and provided medical treatment to the injured. The total number of injured victims has reached 137 people. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the nearest health facilities as well as emergency health facilities.

Provisional data shows that the total number of severely damaged houses in NTT Province has reached 1,543 units, with 328 units moderately damaged and 532 units lightly damaged. Damage has also occurred to public facilities, including 87 educational facilities, 50 places of worship, 76 government offices and a number of other public facilities.

Meanwhile, data collection on displaced residents is still being carried out by the joint team. As of Sunday (16/8), 5,488 people have been displaced in centralised shelters and 171 others have been displaced independently.
