NTT Earthquake Update: BNPB Reports 38 Dead and 13 Injured

The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and surrounding areas continues to rise.

As of Saturday, 15 August 2026 at 15.00 WIB, BNPB recorded 38 people dead and 13 others injured.

Head of BNPB Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto detailed that of the 13 injured victims, two suffered serious injuries and 11 others sustained minor injuries.

“As of 15.00 this afternoon, 38 people have been recorded dead. Then 2 people with serious injuries, 11 with minor injuries,” said Suharyanto during a virtual press conference on Saturday, 15 August 2026.

In addition to the dead and injured, around 2,000 affected residents have chosen to evacuate independently to save themselves.

“Approximately 2,000 people are carrying out independent evacuation,” he said.

The earthquake also impacted a number of infrastructure facilities. BNPB received reports of several road sections being closed due to landslides. However, data collection on road conditions is still being carried out by the Ministry of Public Works.

A number of buildings were also affected, including residents’ homes, community health centres, and one hospital in Maumere. Meanwhile, affected transport facilities include five airports and two ports.

Suharyanto reminded that the casualty and damage data is still provisional. Given that the response is only entering its first day, the figures may still change as data collection in the field progresses.

“But of course this is the first day of the disaster, the data will continue to develop and information will be provided to media colleagues on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

The government itself has assured that emergency response efforts continue to be carried out to respond to the impact of the M7.7 earthquake. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi previously stated that the government is moving quickly to handle the impact of the disaster in NTT.
