NTT Earthquake Update: 87 People Dead

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded that the number of fatalities from the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has increased to 87 people. In addition, 1,298 people have been injured.

“Today, cumulatively, the number of deaths stands at 87,” said Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, during a press conference broadcast on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Saturday (22/8/2026).

The breakdown of fatalities is as follows: Manggarai 31 people, East Manggarai 30 people, Sikka 9 people, Ende 2 people, West Manggarai 1 person, Nagekeo 13 people, and Ngada 4 people.

Meanwhile, 1,298 people have been injured. Of that number, 336 people have sustained serious injuries.

“The number of injured victims has reached 1,298, of whom 336 are seriously injured. East Manggarai Regency has the highest number with 643 people, followed by Manggarai Regency with 285 people,” he said.

Berton said the number of displaced people has also increased due to ongoing aftershocks. Currently, 150,576 people have been displaced.

“The number of displaced people has also risen from yesterday’s figure of around 130,000 to 150,576. The three largest figures are Manggarai Regency with 41,427 people, Nagekeo Regency with 34,256 people, and East Manggarai Regency with 31,372 people,” he explained.

BNPB noted that aftershocks continue to occur. As of today, 5,012 aftershocks have been recorded in NTT.

“Aftershocks are still occurring frequently, and today we have recorded 5,012 aftershocks. The largest magnitude was 6.2, while the smallest was 1.1. Aftershocks felt by residents numbered 124,” he said.
