NTT Earthquake Update: 103 Fatalities, 185,000 Still Displaced

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded the latest data on fatalities from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The death toll has now risen to 103 people.

“Today we recorded an additional three fatalities, bringing the total to 103 for today,” said Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, Acting Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre at BNPB, during a press conference broadcast on BNPB’s YouTube channel on Tuesday (25/8/2026).

Berton detailed that the fatalities comprised 41 people in Manggarai, 34 in East Manggarai, 13 in Nagekeo, 6 in Sikka, 5 in Ngada, 3 in Ende, and 1 in West Manggarai.

“We received an additional figure of 63 people injured, bringing the total we have recorded to 1,666 people,” he said.

In addition, more than 185,000 people remain displaced as a result of the earthquake. Berton noted that aftershocks are still being felt in NTT.

“As of today, we have recorded 185,131 displaced people, both independent evacuees and those in centralised shelters. Today we recorded 4,804 new evacuees,” he added.

According to records from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), there have been 7,029 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred. The aftershocks frequently cause panic among the public.

“Currently, BMKG has recorded 7,029 aftershocks, with the largest magnitude at 6.2 and the smallest at 1.1. Today, 141 tremors were felt. This pattern will continue for up to three to four weeks after the main earthquake occurred,” he said.

“We continue to receive additional evacuees. It is understandable that the constant presence of aftershocks causes deep panic and trauma for residents who experienced the earthquake,” he continued.
