NTT Earthquake Emergency Response Status Extended Until 12 September

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has revealed that the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Emmanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, has extended the emergency response status for earthquake handling by 14 days until 12 September 2026.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, said this is the first extension since the magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck NTT on 15 August.

“We have now obtained an extension for the next 14 days, with the emergency response status extended until 12 September 2026,” said Berton during a press conference held at the BNPB office in Jakarta on Saturday (29/8).

Berton said the extension of the emergency response status is important for the distribution of logistics and other aid so that it can be delivered properly without any administrative errors.

BNPB has recorded 111 fatalities from the earthquake in NTT as of Saturday, 29 August 2026.

Since the magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred on 15 August, 9,278 aftershocks have been recorded to date, with the largest magnitude being 6.2, the smallest 1, and 153 of them felt by the public.

Berton revealed a significant increase in the number of displaced residents. The increase is due to continuously incoming data.

“Why has this increased when two days ago it decreased? This is actually due to a significant data update in Ngada Regency, where the data that had been coming to us was not sufficiently updated or valid, so validation was carried out. As a result, we see that in Ngada, the number of displaced people, which was previously only 3,259, has now become 21,552,” said Berton.

Furthermore, he added that BNPB received 5 tonnes of aid today, while aid already dispatched has reached 22 tonnes.

“Qualitatively, the amount of logistics sent totals 1,916 tonnes in the period from 15 to 29 August 2026. We can see that in Labuan Bajo there are 1,200 tonnes, in Maumere 598 tonnes, in West Manggarai 12 tonnes, Manggarai 25 tonnes, East Manggarai 30 tonnes, Ngada 8 tonnes, Nagekeo 16 tonnes, Ende 16 tonnes, and Sikka 10 tonnes,” said Berton.
