NTT Corrections Office promotes child reintegration through sentence remission

The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections is promoting the social reintegration of juvenile inmates by granting sentence remissions to 23 children who have shown behavioural improvements and actively participated in rehabilitation programmes. Head of the NTT Regional Office, Decky Nurmansyah, stated in Kupang on Thursday that the remission is a form of state recognition for the children’s efforts to reform themselves. “National Children’s Day serves as a reminder that every child deserves the opportunity to change. Sentence remission is not merely a reduction in time served, but a form of state appreciation for their efforts to improve themselves,” he said. Of the recipients, 15 children received a one-month remission, five received two months, and three received three months. No inmates received a second-stage remission, which would have resulted in immediate release. Decky explained that the remissions were granted to children who met administrative and substantive requirements in accordance with the law, including good behaviour and active participation in rehabilitation programmes. He noted that the success of the rehabilitation programme at the Kupang Juvenile Detention Centre is the result of synergy among all officers in creating a safe, educational, and recovery-oriented environment. “Continue to follow the programme earnestly, because every good deed will not be in vain. Return to society as more mature, responsible, and beneficial individuals for your family, nation, and state,” Decky said in his message to the juvenile inmates. The event also included a ceremony where the children washed their parents’ feet, symbolising respect, remorse for past mistakes, and a commitment to reform and reintegrate into society.
