NTB Religious Affairs Office: Komnas HAM Requests Chronology of 3 Central Lombok Islamic Students Burned by Friend
The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has requested a complete chronology of the case involving the burning of three students at the Rosyidatushaulatiyah Al Ibrahim Islamic Boarding School in Sengkol II Hamlet, Mantang Village, Batukliang District, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This was disclosed by the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs for NTB. “Yes, Komnas HAM has asked for the chronology to be drawn up. They want to know what happened on the ground so that this could occur in a boarding school environment,” said Hasbul Manan, Head of the Islamic Boarding School Working Group at the NTB Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, on Thursday (4/6/2026). Manan confirmed that the Rosyidatushaulatiyah Al Ibrahim Islamic Boarding School, the site where three students were burned by a friend resulting in one death, is officially registered with the NTB Religious Affairs Office. Manan assessed that the school’s administrators were negligent in supervising their students, leading to the incident. “If we put it in words, it is negligence, because things that are out of the ordinary, the boarding school should be monitoring,” Manan stressed. Manan confirmed that the deceased student would receive assistance from the NTB Religious Affairs Office. However, the aid is still pending direction from leadership. “We are waiting for the leadership first. So we do not overstep the leadership. Because the problem has only just emerged, the incident itself was a while ago. That means the body was buried a long time ago,” Manan explained. The Rosyidatushaulatiyah Al Ibrahim Foundation Chairman, Tuan Guru Haji (TGH) Ahmad Muzakki, denied allegations that the three students were deliberately burned, resulting in one fatality after hospital treatment. Muzakki recounted that the alleged perpetrator had instructed one of the victims to buy petrol using a bottle. The petrol was to be used to light a fire to straighten a catapult’s wooden frame. A total of five students, including the alleged perpetrator and three victims, then entered a room within the Rosyidatushaulatiyah Al Ibrahim boarding school complex. The room was subsequently locked by the alleged perpetrator. “I asked why they chose that room? So they wouldn’t be found out, he said. So it wouldn’t be visible, wouldn’t be discovered,” Muzakki explained. After the door was tightly shut, the alleged perpetrator poured petrol onto a sheet of mica paper. The remaining petrol in the bottle was placed near the petrol-soaked mica paper. “The bottle was not closed. After that, the mica paper was set alight. Then once the fire was burning, the bottle containing petrol was knocked over and caught fire,” Muzakki revealed. The flaming bottle of petrol was picked up and thrown behind the alleged perpetrator. There, a damaged mattress also caught fire. Three students then ran there, two to the right and one to the left. They were burned there because petrol causes fire to spread quickly. The student who burned the mica paper, the alleged perpetrator, tried to get out of the room. He reportedly asked the three victims to leave together with another student who was not hit by the fire. “But they did not dare to come out. Why? Because the fire from the mica paper was near the door. So these three victims could not get out,” Muzakki clarified. Based on this account, Muzakki denied the narrative stating that his three students were burned intentionally. According to Muzakki, the incident was purely an accident with no intent to harm between students. “So there was no pouring of petrol. This was purely a mistake on their part, and that has been acknowledged by the students’ guardians,” Muzakki stated. The case of the alleged burning of three students at an Islamic boarding school in Batukliang District, Central Lombok, came to light after a video of the victim circulated and went viral on social media. The video shows a victim crying in pain while displaying burn wounds on several parts of his body, which had been bandaged in hospital. The victim stated he felt pain in his torso and legs.
