NTB Regional Police Begin Investigation into Doctor's Illegal Abortion Practice in Mataram

The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Regional Police have begun probing an alleged illegal abortion practice at a private hospital in Mataram City. The practice is believed to have involved a doctor with the initials IKS, alias dr S.

The Director of the Women and Children Protection and Anti-Human Trafficking Directorate (Dirres PPA-PPO) at NTB Regional Police, Chief Commissioner Ni Made Pujewati, confirmed that an investigation had been opened, including taking statements from the parties involved.

“An inquiry has been opened; we have begun looking into it,” said Pujewati on Monday (7 September 2026).

Pujewati explained that the police had not yet received an official report regarding the alleged illegal abortion practice. According to her, the inquiry was initiated following widespread coverage in the mass media.

“There has been no report lodged with us. It has only been media coverage,” said Pujewati.

“We first sought clarification from the sources cited in the reports. That was where we started — with those who provided the information quoted in the coverage,” she added.

The alleged illegal abortion practice came to light after the victim’s family reported it to the Mataram Child Protection Agency (LPA) some time ago. Based on statements from the victim and her family to LPA Mataram, the alleged practice occurred when the victim was under 18 years of age.

The head of LPA Mataram, Joko Jumadi, confirmed that he had provided clarification regarding the case to NTB Regional Police. “Yes, last Friday (4 September 2026), we gave the clarification,” said Joko on Monday.

Previously, LPA Mataram formally reported the alleged illegal abortion practice to the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) for West Lombok. Complaints were also lodged with the head of the Mataram Health Office and the chair of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynaecology Association for the NTB region.
