NTB Provincial Government to Extend Waste Emergency Status
The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Provincial Government will extend the waste emergency status. The extension is being made because the capacity of the Kebon Kongok Regional Final Disposal Site (TPA) is predicted to be over capacity by early 2027.
Head of the NTB Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK), Didik Mahmud Gunawan Hadi, revealed that the process of extending the waste emergency status is underway. At the same time, the NTB DLHK is also racing against a target to immediately build a third landfill at the Kebon Kongok TPA.
"After this, we will extend the waste emergency period. If it is not extended, its capacity will run out by the end of the year or at the latest January next year," said Didik on Tuesday (14/7/2026).
Didik explained that the construction of the third landfill is the most realistic medium-term solution to extend the operational lifespan of the Kebon Kongok Regional TPA. This project will utilise an area at the same location.
"We are cooperating with districts and cities to build the third landfill. The location is still in Kebon Kongok," Didik clarified.
The NTB Provincial Government plans to merge the old waste mounds with the new landfill by utilising a valley area within the TPA site for the construction of the third landfill at Kebon Kongok TPA. This third landfill is calculated to be able to accommodate the waste load for a period of 2.3 to 3 years ahead.
The NTB DLHK is currently accelerating the preparation of planning documents as a reference for budgeting the construction of the third landfill. "The budget is still being prepared. We are speeding up the process first," Didik stressed.
In addition to focusing on new infrastructure, the NTB Provincial Government is also beginning to evaluate the policy of restricting waste disposal trips that was previously implemented at the Kebon Kongok TPA. Didik assessed that limiting the entry of waste transport trucks will not solve the fundamental problem if the volume of waste from upstream continues to soar.
"We will see whether restricting trips is the main solution. Meanwhile, we continue to intensify waste sorting from the source," Didik revealed.
For information, the Kebon Kongok Regional TPA had previously implemented strict trip restrictions before eventually returning to normal operations. The restriction measure was previously deliberately taken to give the government space to optimise existing land as an emergency solution.
However, the condition of this cross-regional connecting TPA is in fact still far from safe. Based on NTB DLHK data, the optimised landfill currently in use is only able to extend the capacity for about two to two and a half years.
In fact, every day the Kebon Kongok TPA must bear the burden of shipments of more than 400 tonnes of waste produced by the communities of Mataram City, West Lombok Regency, Central Lombok, and surrounding areas.
