NT commander visits Irian

JAYAPURA: Australia's Northern Territory Defense Commander, Commodore Geoff Smith, met the Navy's deputy commander of the region, Captain Robert Senduk, at the regional naval headquarters here on Tuesday.

Antara reported that Smith expressed his gratitude for support from the Navy in helping conduct the Anzac (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) Day commemoration in Ambon recently.

Anzac Day pays tribute to members of the Australian and New Zealand armies who were killed during World War II. Some soldiers fought and died in Maluku.

The regional naval base oversees Maluku and Irian Jaya. Before arriving here, Smith also visited Ambon, the East Java capital of Surabaya, and South Sulawesi's capital of Ujungpandang.
