Mumbai, India — NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the overseas arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has signed an agreement with Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) — Malaysia's national payments network — to enable QR-based merchant payments in India and Malaysia.

The initiative will be launched in phases. In the first phase, Indian tourists visiting Malaysia will be able to use UPI apps to make cross-border payments to merchants at locations accepting DuitNow QR, Malaysia's national QR standard operated by PayNet. In the subsequent phase, Malaysian tourists in India will be able to scan UPI QR codes to pay merchants through DuitNow apps.

Through this integration, Indian tourists will be able to transact with millions of DuitNow QR-accepting merchants in Malaysia, including restaurants, retail shops, tourist attractions and various other businesses. Malaysian tourists in India will likewise be able to pay using UPI QR at millions of business establishments across India.

Ritesh Shukla, Managing Director and CEO of NPCI International, said: "Under the guidance of the Government of India and the Reserve Bank of India, we aim to expand UPI's global reach by building a real-time, interoperable payments ecosystem with leading payment networks worldwide. Our partnership with PayNet is an important step towards enabling seamless QR payments in India and Malaysia, allowing tourists to make payments securely and conveniently as they normally would. This collaboration further strengthens our commitment to facilitating cross-border payments whilst reinforcing digital connectivity and economic ties between the two countries."

Praveen Rajan, CEO of PayNet, said: "This agreement demonstrates that national payment infrastructure can support cross-border payments at scale. Once live, the link between Malaysia's DuitNow QR and India's UPI will strengthen payment connectivity for tourists, merchants, banks and the broader financial services ecosystem. In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 and increasing travel between the two countries, this collaboration helps drive broader trade and economic activity between Malaysia and India."

The collaboration between NPCI International and PayNet Malaysia strengthens the payment relationship between India and Malaysia by establishing interoperable QR payment infrastructure that supports secure, efficient and seamless merchant payments for tourists in both countries.
