Now showing on local movie screens

JAKARTA (JP): What are the choice picks for moviegoers this weekend?

City movie theaters are currently screening Air Force One, The Fifth Element, Conspiracy Theory, Business for Pleasure, Robinson Crusoe and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love.

Here is what to expect in Kama Sutra and Conspiracy Theory:

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (Cast: Indira Varma, Sarita Choudhury, Ramon Tikaram, Naveen Andrews) Director: Mira Nair.

Tara (Choudhury), an Indian princess living in the 16th century, and Maya (Varma), her servant, were childhood friends and rivals, with Maya receiving Tara's castoffs. Scores are evened the night before Tara gets married to Raj Singh (Andrews), as custom dictates that the bridegroom must view his bride-to-be, including her maids.

The king cannot forget Maya and asks sculptor Jai Kumar (Tikaram) to carve statues in her image. Maya becomes the king's favorite concubine, but Jai gets a terrible death sentence when it is discovered he made love with Maya.

It may be disappointing for some of us, but those who have seen the video confirm Kama Sutra does not depict the legendary Indian manual of lovemaking.

Conspiracy Theory (Cast: Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Patrick Stewart, Cylk Cozart) Director: Richard Donner.

Cab driver Jerry Fletcher (Gibson) is terrified of everything, suspecting conspiracies in everything from fluoridation of drinking water to international monetary policy.

Nobody will listen to him, including Justice Department attorney Alice Sutton (Roberts), until he is nearly abducted by Dr. Jonas (Stewart).

The lawyer and the cabbie are then engaged in a desperate flight for their lives. In the process they discover the truth about a shocking incident that reveals secrets both must understand. (bsr)
