Note this! Five traffic congestion hotspots during Lebaran 2026 mudik
Jakarta — VIVA – The Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) of the Indonesian National Police has mapped five main clusters that are potential congestion hotspots during the Lebaran 2026 mudik. One area receiving serious attention is rest areas along tol road segments, which often trigger congestion as vehicles stop on the shoulder.
Director of Law Enforcement (Dirgakkum) of Korlantas Polri, Brigadier General Faizal, said the police have identified several critical points that require special monitoring during the mudik period. “From the police there are five cluster points that are our focus. The first is tol roads, then tol roads and rest areas. The second is arterial routes. The third is crossings, ports. The fourth is stations, airports. The fifth is places of worship and recreational or tourist areas,” Faizal told reporters on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
In addition to mapping hotspots, the police are also preparing various traffic engineering schemes to anticipate congestion, particularly on arterial routes that are commonly used by motorbike travellers. “There will be terms we use: there are local one-way, then one-way on segments, then national one-way. The local one-way is usually used by Dirlantas or regional units to manage how two-wheeled and four-wheeled movements are coordinated,” he said.
According to Faizal, motorcycles are among the most at-risk vehicles during mudik travel, so special arrangements are needed on the ground. “Usually when two-wheelers are involved, we gather them in one area, then depart together, and escort them. Because in escorting, we can regulate their speed,” he said.
Meanwhile, congestion at tol rest areas also draws attention because it often triggers queues up to the shoulder of the road. To overcome this, police will ask drivers who do not secure a place at the rest area to exit the tol and rest in areas nearby. “One of our measures, besides asking them to proceed to the next rest area, is to ask them to exit the tol first. Exit and then look for a rest area outside or in nearby areas surrounding the tol,” Faizal said.
