Facilities such as power sockets on trains certainly make it easier for passengers to charge their devices during journeys. However, not all electronic devices are allowed to be used, and there are several devices that are prohibited because they can endanger the trip.

This regulation has come under the spotlight again after a viral video of a passenger using an electric stove inside a train to cook instant noodles recently. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has emphasised that using high-powered electronic devices like that clearly violates the rules.

In general, the power sockets on trains are only intended for low-power devices. If used outside of the provisions, the risks that arise are not only disturbing other passengers but can also trigger electrical disruptions up to short circuits.

Here is the list of electronic devices prohibited from use on trains, quoted from CNN Indonesia, Friday (24/4/2026):

  • Electric stove

  • Rice cooker or rice cooker

  • Hair dryer

  • Hair straightener

  • Electric kettle

  • Large-powered portable fan

In addition, passengers are also not allowed to charge power banks directly at the train’s power sockets. The use of high-power devices simultaneously is feared to burden the train’s overall electrical system.

Conversely, the permitted devices are limited to personal gadgets with low power consumption, such as:

  • Mobile phones

  • Tablets

  • Laptops

  • Earphones or TWS

KAI reminds that the use of electricity inside the train must be done wisely. Passengers are also asked to unplug the charger after the device is fully charged to avoid the risk of excessive heat.

In addition to safety factors, the use of electronic devices that do not comply with the rules can also disturb the comfort of other passengers during the journey. If experiencing any issues inside the train, passengers are advised to immediately contact the on-duty conductor.

The contact number for staff is usually available on the carriage walls. KAI also urges all passengers to respect each other and maintain public facilities, so that the journey remains safe and comfortable for everyone.
