Note It Down! Schedule and Route for the Mubeng Beteng Ritual at the Jogja Palace on the Eve of 1 Suro

The annual Lampah Budaya Mubeng Beteng procession, commemorating the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1448 H or the Javanese New Year 1 Sura Be-1960, is once again being organised by the Paguyuban Abdi Dalem of the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, or the Yogyakarta Palace. The event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday night, 16 June 2026, continuing into the early hours of Wednesday, 17 June 2026. According to the official Instagram account of the Yogyakarta Special Region Culture Service, participants will gather from 8:00 PM WIB. The schedule includes a Macapat reading session from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, followed by an opening ceremony from 11:00 PM to 11:30 PM. The Mubeng Beteng walk will commence at 11:30 PM. The route begins at Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Lor (Keben), proceeding along Jalan Rotowijayan, Jalan Kauman, Jalan H. Agus Salim, Jalan KH. Wahid Hasyim, Jalan Suryowijayan, Jalan MT. Haryono, Jalan Mayjend Sutoyo, Jalan Brigjen Katamso, Jalan Ibu Ruswa, and Jalan Pekapalan Alun-alun Utara, before returning to Kagungan Dalem Kamandungan Lor (Keben). Head of the Yogyakarta Culture Service, Dian Lakshmi Pratiwi, stated that this is not a Hajad Dalem, or a palace event, but rather a Hajad Kawula Dalem, initiated and carried out by the royal servants. She explained that it is a cultural practice inherited through generations. In Javanese philosophy, the silent walk, or tapa bisu, is not merely a physical activity but a means of self-introspection on the journey of the past year, involving self-restraint and prayers to God Almighty for safety, peace, and blessings in the year ahead. Pratiwi confirmed that the event is free of charge and open to the general public without any registration requirements.
