Not on Fridays: DIY Regional Government Implements WFH for Civil Servants Every Wednesday
The Special Region of Yogyakarta Regional Government (DIY) is not enforcing a work from home (WFH) policy for Civil Servants (ASN) today, Friday (10/4). The Secretary of the DIY Province, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, stated that they have set WFH for ASN every Wednesday, starting 15 April 2026. Meanwhile, the Circular Letter (SE) regulating this still requires revision and approval by the Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. “Next Wednesday (week) it will already be executed, already implemented,” said Made, on Friday (10/4). This provision differs from the central government’s directive, which implements WFH for ASN every Friday starting today, 10 April 2026. The DIY Regional Government reasons that choosing Wednesday for WFH avoids misuse for long weekends. In the Minister of Home Affairs’ (Mendagri) SE, ASN are also urged to save fuel oil (BBM), limit the use of official vehicles, and optimise the use of environmentally friendly transportation. The DIY Regional Government will divide the implementation of these exhortations on different days or besides every Wednesday. Later, this will also be included in the SE signed by Sultan HB X. “So in the Mendagri SE, it’s not just WFH but also we must have car-free day and so on. So if piled up on one Friday, it seems a bit difficult, in terms of regulating it it’s difficult,” said Made. The car-free day itself refers to the DIY Regional Government’s policy that has been trialled since January 2026. The regulation applies to ASN with the aim of creating an environmentally friendly, healthy, and pollution-free office environment. “It’s more comfortable indeed, and more effective to WFH on Wednesday, car-free day remains on Friday. So we urge the car-free day to apply to all OPD/agencies of the DIY Regional Government,” continued Made. Still referring to the Mendagri SE, the DIY Regional Government will also comply with other energy efficiency exhortations such as water savings and electricity usage regulation. Made said that they have prepared monitoring forms to monitor or evaluate before and after the energy-saving implementation. “There is a strategic plan form from the head of OPD on what it will be like later. Certainly, there will be innovations that we hope will emerge in each OPD related to this,” she said. The government is implementing work from home (WFH) for civil servants (ASN) one day a week every Friday for energy efficiency in facing global conflicts. The government is also limiting the use of official cars and encouraging the use of public transportation. Not only that, the government is also limiting domestic official travel by up to 50 percent and foreign travel by up to 70 percent.
