Not More Advanced, This Is the Real Reason the US Sent George Washington to Replace Lincoln
After more than 260 days of deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, the United States is now moving the aircraft carrier USS George Washington from Asia towards the Middle East. The nuclear-powered carrier, which has long been one of the main symbols of US military presence in the western Pacific, is expected to replace the Abraham Lincoln, which has undergone a lengthy assignment in the war against Iran.
At first glance, the replacement looks as though Washington is sending a newer and more powerful carrier to the battlefield. In reality, the George Washington and the Abraham Lincoln are close siblings: both belong to the Nimitz class, are nuclear-powered, have undergone major mid-life overhauls, and carry air wings that are technologically very similar.
For that reason, the strategic significance of the George Washington’s arrival does not lie in a leap in destructive power compared with the Lincoln. The Pentagon is essentially replacing one floating airbase that has been forced to work for a very long time with another carrier that is already in a deployed condition and carrying a ready-to-operate air wing.
The US Navy confirmed that the George Washington Carrier Strike Group departed Da Nang, Vietnam, on 5 August 2026 after completing a scheduled visit. The carrier was sailing at the time with the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls and the guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup, and was carrying Carrier Air Wing Five, or CVW-5.
The battle group’s journey then continued westward. A US Navy official confirmed to USNI News that the George Washington, Robert Smalls and Shoup transited the Singapore Strait and were then in the Malacca Strait on 13 August.
USNI News reported a day later that the George Washington group had passed through the Malacca Strait and entered the Andaman Sea. The movement placed the ship on a route towards the Indian Ocean and then the Middle East region, but the US military did not announce the ship’s actual coordinates continuously due to operational security considerations.
Associated Press reported that the George Washington is expected to replace the Abraham Lincoln as one of the US carriers deployed to the Middle East. Because the replacement has not yet been officially announced as complete, saying that the George Washington has already taken over the Lincoln’s position in the Arabian Sea would get ahead of the available facts.
The Abraham Lincoln itself is still recorded as operating in the Arabian Sea after arriving in the region in January. On 13 August, USNI News noted that the ship had completed 265 days of deployment and 241 consecutive days at sea, after its planned return home in May was delayed due to the Iran war.
That condition follows earlier reports about pressure on the crew, supplies and the ship’s endurance after the extended deployment. The US Navy denied any increase in reports of suicidal ideation or attempts on the ship, but acknowledged that the long deployment placed great strain on personnel and their families.
