Not Just Electric Vehicles: GAC Indonesia Eyes ICE Car Market
GUANGZHOU, KOMPAS.com – GAC Indonesia, through its two brands Aion and Hyptech, has so far been known as a player in the electric vehicle or Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) segment. Although currently focused on marketing its electrification product line, GAC Indonesia is not turning a blind eye to other market potentials. This even includes bringing in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. “With the GAC logo, it means we will bring vehicles not only with EV technology. It cannot be denied that if asked whether we are interested or not, (yes) we are interested,” said Andry in Guangzhou, China, on Monday (20/4/2026). GAC’s interest in revisiting the conventional car market is not without reason. Andry realises that although the electric vehicle trend is on the rise, the largest “slice” in the national automotive industry is still held by ICE vehicles. “According to Gaikindo data, ICE vehicles hold the largest portion. Although year by year the portion decreases, in terms of sales volume, ICE is still the largest,” said Andry. Although the conventional car market is still dominant, data shows that public acceptance of EVs is growing rapidly. With this achievement, electric vehicles now contribute more than 12 percent of the total national car market. This positive trend continues into early 2026. In the January to March period, electric car distribution has reached 33,150 units, up 95.9 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
