The number of elderly people in Indonesia is notably high. However, the highest concentration is not found in Jakarta or East Java. So, which region holds the record?

This data is summarised in the 2025 Elderly Population Statistics released by BPS (Statistics Indonesia). The report explains that the number of elderly people in Indonesia is high and continues to show a significant increasing trend. For context, a country is categorised as having an ageing population structure if the proportion of the population aged 60 and above reaches 10 per cent or more.

Indonesia has officially entered the ageing population phase since 202 proportion of its elderly population has exceeded the 10 per cent threshold. It is recorded that in 2025, 11.93 per cent of the Indonesian population is elderly. This means approximately 12 out of every 100 residents in Indonesia are senior citizens.

From the data, it was found that the province with the highest proportion of elderly residents in Indonesia is the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DI Yogyakarta). Yogyakarta has a percentage reaching 17.78 per cent.

Meanwhile, following closely is East Java at 15.40%, and in third place is Bali at 15.03%.
