Not Equivalent Yet, Trump Rejects Iran's Peace Proposal
WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.com - United States President Donald Trump has acknowledged that he has not yet reviewed the exact wording of Iran’s new peace proposal. However, it is highly likely that Trump will not accept it, as Iran is deemed not to have paid an equivalent price. Trump has instead openly raised the possibility of resuming airstrikes. This signal emerged as Trump seeks to end the war he launched more than two months ago. The development was triggered by an escalation in the war between Israel and Iran’s ally, Hezbollah, which has run parallel to the Iran war and could further complicate broader peace efforts. Iran has stated that talks with Washington cannot continue unless a ceasefire also applies in Lebanon. The region was invaded by Israel in March to target Hezbollah after the Iran-backed Lebanese group fired across the border in support of Tehran. Lebanon and Israel agreed to a separate ceasefire last month, but fighting has continued, albeit on a smaller scale. On Sunday, the Israeli military issued urgent warnings to residents of 11 towns and villages in southern Lebanon, urging them to evacuate their homes and move at least 1,000 metres to open areas. The military stated that it is conducting operations against Hezbollah following what it described as violations of the ceasefire, and warned that anyone near fighters or Hezbollah facilities could be at risk. In a social media post, Trump wrote: “I will soon review the plan that Iran just sent to us, but I cannot imagine that the plan can be accepted because they have not paid a sufficiently high price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years,” he wrote. On Saturday (2/5/2026), a senior Iranian official said the Iranian proposal would first open shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz and end the US blockade against Iran. Meanwhile, talks on Iran’s nuclear programme would be postponed until later. Although he has expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s proposal, Trump said he had not heard all the details as of Saturday. “They told me about the concept of the deal. They will give me the exact words now,” he revealed.
