Not Egypt or Mesopotamia, This Ancient Iranian Script is Claimed to be a Pioneer of Modern Writing

For a long time, the early history of human writing has been dominated by two major names: Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Mesopotamian Cuneiform. However, an ancient script that was forgotten for 125 years has now resurfaced and has the potential to rewrite the history books about how humans first recorded their speech. The mysterious script is called Proto-Elamite. Emerging in the Iranian highlands around 5,000 years ago, this writing system was once overlooked by experts, although it was discovered in 1899 in the ancient city of Susa. However, the Proto-Elamite script proves that there was a third intellectual force that developed alongside the infant civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Recent research shows that although Proto-Elamite appeared slightly later—about 5,200 years ago—this script is believed to be the most advanced writing system among the three at that time. What makes Proto-Elamite so special is its ability to represent spoken language. Although human spoken language is estimated to have existed 1.7 million years ago, Proto-Elamite is believed to be a crucial moment when humans were finally able to write down exactly what they said. Experts call this discovery a “giant leap” in the evolution of human communication. If early hieroglyphs and cuneiform were mostly used for recording goods (proto-cuneiform), Proto-Elamite went further by trying to capture the structure of the language itself. Although technically very advanced, Proto-Elamite holds a major mystery: why did this writing system disappear shortly after it was discovered? To date, most of the Proto-Elamite tablets have not been fully deciphered by linguists. These clay tablets were first found at the archaeological site of Susa and are associated with the Elamite culture that emerged 4,500 years ago. However, because the tablets are much older than the Elamite culture, experts named them Proto-Elamite. Now, with the help of technology and new approaches, scientists are beginning to rediscover the secrets behind these complex symbols. If successfully deciphered, Proto-Elamite is not just an ordinary ancient script, but a key to understanding how the human mind first transformed into permanent written words.
