The activity of purchasing prepared food and beverages, commonly known as ‘jajan’ in Indonesia, remains quite high, with many snacks becoming favourites among the population. According to data from the 2025 Food Consumption Statistics document, regional preferences for these snacks can be identified through resident expenditure on the Prepared Food and Beverage group.

Several interesting findings emerged from this data. One notable point is the average monthly per capita expenditure on prepared food and beverages, which reaches Rp 294,188 for urban residents, whereas expenditure for those in rural areas is significantly lower at Rp 181,387 per month.

Nationally, Indonesians show a high preference for specific types of snacks:

  • Gorengan (Fried Snacks): The ‘king’ of snacks, with consumption levels reaching 144 pieces per person per year.

  • Kue Basah (Traditional Moist Cakes): Consumed at an average of 73 pieces per person per year.

  • Mie Bakso/Rebus/Goreng (Meatball Noodles/Boiled/Fried Noodles): Indonesians eat out for noodles at an average of 27 portions per person per year.

  • Nasi Campur/Rames (Mixed Rice): Reaches 32 portions per person per year.

  • Ice Cream: Consumed at an average of 11 cups per person per year.

Furthermore, the data identifies which regions have the highest expenditure on snacks. Interestingly, Jakarta does not hold the top position; instead, Highland Papua leads the list. The rankings are as follows:

  • Highland Papua: Rp 1,256,747

  • DKI Jakarta: Rp 1,153,404

  • Riau Islands: Rp 1,063,897

  • Bangka Belitung Islands: Rp 915,697
